A ’90s action classic is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Air Force One

An immensely watchable movie.

Staying in to hide from the rain?

May we suggest a movie?

10 big ones were just added to Netflix, while a film with a very shocking ending just celebrated its 15th anniversary.

However, if you need more options, here are the movies on TV tonight.

Air Force One – Film4 – 9pm

In our pick for tonight, terrorists (led by Gary Oldman) hijack Air Force One with the US President (Harrison Ford) and his family on board.

While the Vice President (Glenn Close) negotiates from Washington DC, the President, who is a Vietnam veteran, fights to rescue the hostages on board.

Directed by the late and great Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, In the Line of Fire), Air Force One is essentially Die Hard if it was set on a plane and John McClane was the president.

It’s also pretty quotable – “Get off my plane!” – and the supporting cast, including Dean Stockwell and William H. Macy, is solid.

Dirty Harry – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

This iconic action thriller follows Inspector “Dirty” Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) as he hunts down a serial killer terrorising San Francisco.

Mercy Black – Horror Xtra – 9pm

In this 2019 American horror, a woman is released from psychiatric care and sent to live with her sister and young nephew 15 years after stabbing a classmate to conjure a phantom known as Mercy Black.

The Vault – Legend – 9pm

James Franco is among the cast of this crime horror about two estranged sisters who are forced to rob a bank in order to save their brother. However, this is no ordinary bank.

Sicario – TG4 – 9.30pm

“Time to meet God.”

Rocky – ITV4 – 10pm

In this Oscar Best Picture winner, a small-time Philadelphia boxer (Sylvester Stallone, who also wrote the movie) gets a supremely rare chance to fight the world heavyweight champion.

Along with Air Force One, Hellbound: Hellraiser II is also an option tonight

Hellbound: Hellraiser II – Legend – 10.50pm

Pinhead returns in this messy if not without merit sequel to the classic horror Hellraiser.

Bloodline – Horror Xtra – 10.50pm

A cast against type Seann William Scott (American Pie) stars in this horror thriller as a vigilante serial killer.

The Lighthorsemen – Turner Classic Movies – 11.10pm

An Australian World War I drama based on true events.

Pawn Sacrifice – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Tobey Maguire is famous chess player Bobby Fischer in this well-reviewed biopic.

Terminator: Genisys – Film4 – 11.25pm

Maybe not the worst Terminator film but definitely the silliest.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
