Our pick for tonight, this ’80s action drama stars Tom Cruise as Pete Mitchell aka Maverick, a young daredevil pilot ace given the chance to train at the US Navy’s Fighter Weapons School.

With its long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, flying into Irish cinemas on Friday, 27 May, what better time could there be to watch for the first time or revisit the original?

Deadpool 2 – Film4 – 9pm

Ryan Reynolds returns as the merc with a mouth in this solid superhero sequel.

Dumb and Dumber – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey star in this much-loved comedy.

The Hunger Games – MTV – 9pm

The first entry in the hit YA franchise.

The Five-Year Engagement – Comedy Central – 9pm

In this rom-com, a man (Jason Segel) proposes to his girlfriend (Emily Blunt) but unexpected events keep tripping them up as they look to walk down the aisle together.

The Changeling – Horror Channel – 9pm

This acclaimed 1980 horror follows an esteemed composer (George C. Scott) who moves into a mansion in a new city that he comes to believe is haunted.

Zombieland: Double Tap – Channel 4 – 9.20pm

The sequel to 2009’s hit horror comedy Zombieland.

The Snapper – RTÉ One – 9.40pm

The Magnificent Seven – RTÉ2 – 9.50pm

The remake of the classic Western with Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.

Crazy Rich Asians – BBC One – 10.20pm

In this fun romantic comedy, a Chinese-American professor (Constance Wu) travels to meet her boyfriend’s family only to discover they are among the richest in Singapore.

Desperately Seeking Susan – TG4 – 10.30pm

Madonna’s first major screen role, this comedy-drama centres on the interaction between two women – a bored housewife and a bohemian drifter – linked by various messages in the personals section of a newspaper.

The Dirty Dozen – ITV4 – 10.45pm

Lee Marvin leads an ensemble cast in this ’60s war film.

Doghouse – Horror Channel – 11.05pm

Another zombie comedy, this time with Danny Dyer and Stephen Graham.

Jason Bourne – Channel 4 – 11.15pm

The last entry in the Bourne franchise to date.

47 Ronin – Turner Classic Movies – 11.15pm

Keanu Reeves stars in this critically panned action fantasy.

Happy Death Day – Film4 – 11.20pm

This entertaining horror comedy follows a college student (Jessica Rothe) who is murdered on the night of her birthday but begins reliving the day repeatedly and sets out to find the killer.

Cal – RTÉ2 – 12.15am

This acclaimed ’80s Irish drama stars Helen Mirren and John Lynch and takes place against the backdrop of the Troubles.

Pale Rider – RTÉ One – 12.40am

Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this film that became the highest grossing Western of the ’80s.

Land of Mine – BBC Two – 12.45am

This 2015 Danish war drama has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ghosts of Mars – Horror Channel – 12.50am

Critically panned at the time of its release in 2001, this sci-fi horror from director John Carpenter has its defenders.
