A tense ’80s thriller is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It was one of Nicole Kidman’s earliest roles.

It may not be quite the weekend yet but who is to say you can’t relax on the sofa this Thursday evening with a good flick.

Here are the movies on TV offerings tonight.

Unforgiven – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

After becoming famous with Westerns, Clint Eastwood returned to the genre, directing and starring in this incredible epic which took home the Best Picture award at the Oscars.

You Only Live Twice – ITV4 – 9pm

The fifth Bond movie with Sean Connery, You Only Live Twice is notable for having its screenplay penned by Roald Dahl.

84 Charing Cross Road – True Movies – 9pm

This acclaimed ’80s drama stars Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins and tells the true story of a transatlantic business correspondence about used books that developed into a close friendship.

Pitch Perfect 3 – Film4 – 9pm

The third and so far final entry in the musical comedy series.

The Searchers – BBC Four – 10.15pm

Another classic Western, except this time starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford.

Alien: Covenant – Film4 – 10.55pm

Michael Fassbender shines playing two different androids in the last film to be released in the classic horror franchise to date.

Safe House – ITV4 – 11.25pm

In his decent action thriller, a young CIA agent (Ryan Reynolds) is tasked with looking after a fugitive (Denzel Washington) in a safe house but finds himself on the run with his charge when the location is attacked.

Dead Calm – Turner Classic Movies – 11.40pm

In our pick for tonight, a married couple (Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill) on vacation alone on their yacht at sea comes across a stranger (Billy Zane) who is not at all what he appears.

Released in 1989, with its claustrophobic setting and an unsettling turn from Zane, Dead Calm truly lives up to its great tagline “a voyage into fear”.
