27th Jul 2022

A historical drama starring Saoirse Ronan is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Margot Robbie co-stars in the 2018 movie.

It is Wednesday, that point in the week where the weekend feels so near but yet so far.

But, to try and make the time fly quicker, you can watch one of these movies airing on telly this evening.

Here are your choices for tonight.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – Film4 – 9pm

For my money, the second-best Mission: Impossible movie behind Fallout.

This fourth entry in the franchise is the one with the incredible sequence that takes place at the Burj Khalifa (aka the world’s tallest building!) in Dubai.

Payback/Lethal Weapon 4 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm/11.10pm

It’s a Mel Gibson double bill over on TCM.

Coogan’s Bluff – ITV4 – 9pm

This ’60s crime thriller is the first collaboration between Clint Eastwood and director Don Siegel who would later work together on Dirty Harry and Escape from Alcatraz.

Priest of Love – Great! Movies Classic – 9pm

Ian McKellen plays writer D.H. Lawrence in this biographical drama.

Mary Queen of Scots – BBC One – 10.50pm

Our pick for tonight, this 2018 historical drama centres on Mary, Queen of Scots (Saoirse Ronan) and her attempt to overthrow her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie).

Mary Queen of Scots received mixed reviews upon its release – including from us here at JOE – with some critics taking aim at its overstuffed story and historical inaccuracies.

That being said, Robbie and Ronan’s performances – along with the movie’s beautiful cinematography and lavish costumes – are just about enough to recommend it.

Cabin Fever – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

This 2016 remake of Eli Roth’s cult horror favourite of the same name has a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes so it’s probably best to avoid it.

Get Carter – ITV4 – 11.05pm

When his brother dies under mysterious circumstances in a car accident, London gangster Jack Carter (Michael Caine) travels to Newcastle to investigate in this British crime classic.

Skin – Film4 – 11.40pm

The great Jamie Bell stars in this 2018 drama as a young man who leaves the white supremacist gang he joined as a teenager in order to turn his back on hatred and violence and transform his life.
