Your essential pre-game guide from the directors of the movie itself…
You may be aware of a certain band of colourful superheroes who are out to, er, avenge their fallen comrades and half of the known universe.
You may be aware that the follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War is currently eating up the box office.
And you may be aware that there is a lot of hype about Endgame.
If you’ve somehow been sleeping under a rock, here’s a trailer:

All caught up? Need some more background?
Maybe you’re going to be dragged to Endgame with little to no prior knowledge of key events.
Perhaps you just don’t have the time to sit down and watch all 21 previous movies in the MCU.

Speaking with Comicbook.com, Endgame helmers Joe and Anthony Russo have outlined the essential Marvel movies that one should take in before the next chapter.
And, of course, they’ve picked the very ones that they directed. Wise men.
“Civil War and Infinity War without question,” the brothers noted when asked that most pertinent of questions.
“Because the events of Civil War directly affected Infinity War, and we would argue that the reason they lost to Thanos is because of Civil War,” they explained.
“Clearly, that carries over to Endgame. If you’re going to add one more in there, I’d probably say Winter Soldier, only in that those are the four movies we directed, and they’re all thematically connected to one another.”
In fairness, they’re probably the best cluster of MCU movies out there, so the self-promotion isn’t too awkward.
We’d probably add Captain Marvel to the mix, given that it looks like she’ll have a major part to play in Endgame, and both Guardians of the Galaxy films as they’re just really good and surprisingly emotionally intelligent.
In summary, you should definitely watch, in order:
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Captain America: Civil War
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Captain Marvel
And for the craic, you should watch:
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
