An excellent thriller drama with 97% on Rotten Tomatoes is on TV tonight

It comes from the same writer-director as the upcoming Tom Hardy movie The Bikeriders.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout – E4 – 9pm
The best of the Mission: Impossibles.

Venom – Film4 – 9pm
A great Tom Hardy just about makes this average superhero flick worth watching.

Deck the Halls – Virgin Media One – 9pm
Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick star in this Christmas comedy that did not get good reviews.

Bad Santa 2 – Sky Max – 9pm
Another Christmas-themed comedy that critics did not love for the most part.

The Way West – TG4 – 9.30pm
Friday night is Western night at TG4. This one is from the ’60s and stars Kirk Douglas and Robert Mitchum.

Traffic – Dave – 9.40pm
The Oscar-winning star-studded crime drama that explores the illegal drug trade from several different angles.

Between the Canals – RTÉ2 – 9.40pm
This gritty Irish crime thriller – which features a young Barry Keoghan – is from the director of Cardboard Gangsters.

Tye Sheridan in Mud, our TV movie pick for tonight

Vampires – Legend – 10.50pm
A fun action horror from legendary filmmaker John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing).

Hellbound: Hellraiser II – LegendXtra – 10.50pm
This sequel to horror classic Hellraiser is nowhere near as good as the original.

Mud – BBC Two – 11.05pm
Our pick for tonight is this 2012 drama that sees two teenage boys (Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland) discover a dishevelled but charismatic man named Mud (Matthew McConaughey) living along the Mississippi River.

Forming a bond, Mud reveals to the teens that he is a fugitive, with the pair then agreeing to help him evade his pursuers.

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols (whose next movie is the much-anticipated Tom Hardy-starring The Bikeriders), Mud’s atmospheric setting, compelling story and wonderful lead turn form a peak “McConaissance” McConaughey led to the film earning a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As well as airing on TV tonight, Mud is available to rent on Apple TV+, Google Play and Rakuten TV.

Weathering With You – Film4 – 11.1opm
An acclaimed animated romantic fantasy from Japan.

Beautiful Boy – RTÉ One – 11.15pm
This biographical drama centres around a father (Steve Carell) and son (Timothée Chalamet) relationship that becomes increasingly strained by the latter’s drug addiction.

Adaptation – Comedy Central – 11.30pm
This Oscar-winning meta comedy-drama sees Nicolas Cage play the writer of the movie – Charlie Kaufman.
