Netflix have just added an Irish dark comedy that is getting comparisons to hit serial killer drama Dexter.
Obituary stars Siobhan Cullen (who is also starring in the upcoming Netflix series Bodkin) as Elvira Clancy, a young woman in a small Irish town who takes up a job as an obituarist.
Becoming more obsessed with the morbid, Elvira starts to take matters into her own hands to make the local death notices a bit more interesting.
Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters), Ronan Raftery (Gangs of London) and Danielle Galligan (Shadow and Bone) also star.
The series originally aired on RTÉ last year and received positive reviews, particularly for its original plot and lead performance from Cullen.
The entire series was shot in in Ballyshannon and Bundoran in County Donegal and has now been given a new lease on life after being added to the streamer.
Viewers have already been gushing over Obituary since it was added to the streamer last week, with many comparing it to long-running serial killer drama.
One viewers on X said: "Obituary on Netflix... What in the Dexter Morgan is this?!?!"
Another commented: "For those that enjoyed Dexter but wanted more Irish grit - watch obituary on Netflix it's bloody fantastic!"
A third added: "Obituary on Netflix is AMAZING!"
With a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Obituary has potential to be a massive hit on Netflix, and yet another fine example of Irish dark comedy after Bad Sisters and The Banshees of Inisherin.
You can check some of its positive reviews below.
The Age - "There is Dexter, the mother lode of serial killer self-analysis, plus John Michael McDonagh movies The Guard and Calvary... But the show is ultimately a success because it transcends those comparisons to find its own peculiar pitch."
TIME Magazine - "Imagine Dexter meets Bad Sisters, with a chilling yet somehow quite likable lead performance from Cullen, and you won’t be far off."
Decider - "There’s dark and then there’s dark, and Obituary is dark. Elvira is almost cartoonishly in love with death, as if Wednesday Addams grew up to write obituaries for a local newspaper."
