Netflix have responded to criticism of the show 13 Reasons Why by taking action and adding increased trigger warnings for the teen drama.
It’s the show everyone is talking about for a variety of reasons, the first season on the show has been praised for bringing awareness to the trauma facing teens including suicide and sexual assault. But there’s been plenty of criticism 13 Reasons Why and its depictions of the graphic topics of suicide, rape, and bullying.
Some mental health groups and schools have argued that the show glorifies suicide without offering an alternative.
Over the course of 13 episodes, a suicide note left by Hannah Baker – whose death has already taken place at the start of the series – is relayed over a series of tapes that address the roles that various characters in the show had in her death.
Netflix have responded to criticism of the show and its content by adding increased warnings at the start of each episode.
“While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories,” Netflix said in a statement initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
“Currently the episodes that carry graphic content are identified as such and the series overall carries a TV-MA rating. Moving forward, we will add an additional viewer warning card before the episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series.”
