HBO Max has unveiled a funny first look at its upcoming period adventure-comedy Our Flag Means Death which stars Flight of the Conchords and What We Do in the Shadows alumni Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi.

According to the network, the show is loosely based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet (played by Darby), a pampered aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate.

On account of his background, he earned the nickname of “The Gentleman Pirate”.

The show will also feature as a character history’s most feared and revered pirate Blackbeard, who will be played by Waititi, who won an Oscar in 2020 for writing Jojo Rabbit.

On top of starring in Our Flag Means Death, Waititi is executive producing the series and directed its pilot episode.

Created by David Jenkins (People of Earth), the show also features amongst its ensemble cast Con O’Neill (Chernobyl), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Guz Khan (Army of Thieves), Joel Fry (Yesterday), Kristian Nairn (Game of Thrones), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful) and Samson Kayo (Truth Seekers).

Our Flag Means Death does not currently have an Irish release date, though it premieres in the US in March so you can expect it here sometime after that.
