New horror movie trailer has one of the best jump scares in years

Stephen Porzio

It’s one of a number of major trailers released this week.

A trailer for a new horror movie dropped this week and has set the internet abuzz thanks to its creepy premise and one particular jump scare in its teaser.

The film is titled Smile and its plot revolves around a doctor named Rose (Sosie Bacon, Mare of Easttown) who witnesses a bizarre and traumatic incident involving one of her patients.

Not long after this, the doctor starts experiencing frightening occurrences of her own that she cannot explain and as such, she is forced to “confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality”.

Based on the trailer, it seems as if Rose is being stalked by a malevolent entity that makes it appear as if everyone around her is smiling unnaturally.

And going by the teaser – particularly the jump scare at the end of it – this is only the beginning of what the evil force has in store for her.

Recalling in its premise great horrors like The Ring, It Follows or The Empty Man, as well as 2018’s guilty pleasure chiller Truth or Dare, Smile is the feature debut of filmmaker Parker Finn and is based on his short film Laura Hasn’t Slept.

Co-starring in the movie alongside Bacon is Caitlin Stasey (Tomorrow, When the War Began), Jessie T. Usher (The Boys), Judy Reyes (Scrubs), Kal Penn (the Harold & Kumar films), Kyle Gallner (American Sniper), Rob Morgan (Don’t Look Up) and Robin Weigert (Deadwood).

Set for a cinema release on 30 September, you can watch the trailer for Smile below.
