Rom-coms, big Marvel blockbusters, heist thrillers and three-hour horror-dramas! Literally something for everyone in the cinema this month!

If you’re planning ahead for your cinema trips in May, then we’ve gone ahead and picked out the eight must-watch new arrivals on the big screen, starting with…

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.3 – May 3

The gang is all back for the trilogy closer, which sees the Guardians attempt to reunite with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), while also battle Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) and the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), who are directly related to Rocket’s (Bradley Cooper) tragic past. Check out our spoiler-free review of the movie right here.

LAKELANDS – May 5

This powerful Irish drama tells the Cian (Éanna Hardwicke), a young Gaelic footballer struggling to come to terms with a career-ending injury after an attack on a night out. He attempts to search for his own identity in a small town where Gaelic football is a religion, and identity is defined by what you can do on the pitch.

LOVE AGAIN – May 10

Priyanka Chopra Jonas stars in this rom-com-dram about a woman still grieving the loss of her partner, sending messages to his old phone number, unaware that a man (Sam Heughan) is receiving them, who also happens to be working with Celine Dion (playing herself), and asks the megastar singer to help him find this mystery woman.

FAST X – May 19

Jason Momoa and Brie Larson join the swelling ranks of the Fast & Furi-verse, this time involving blowing up the Vatican (!?) and also driving down the side of the Hoover Dam (!?!?). These movies are insane and we love them and they belong on the biggest cinema screen imaginable.

BEAU IS AFRAID – May 19

The director of modern horror classics Hereditary and Midsommar sends Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix off on the ultimate anxiety attack in this comedy-horror hybrid about a man living in constant fear of causing disappointment in others. One of the weirdest movies you’ll ever see, but it is all three hours long, so prepare yourself.

SISU – May 26

This WWII-set action movie is already being compared to both Rambo and John Wick thanks to its absolutely vicious action scenes. And in direct contrast to the movie above, it is a tight 91 minutes long.

THE LITTLE MERMAID – May 26

Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns) directs this live-action adaptation of the much-loved fairytale, with mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) dreaming of being able to live on dry land. Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay and Melissa McCarthy fill out the impressive supporting cast.

HYPNOTIC – May 26

Ben Affleck plays a detective investigating a series of heists being performed by a criminal using hypnosis, but the reasons behind the crimes might have a much deeper connection than anyone realises. From director Robert Rodriguez (Alita Battle Angel, Desperado).
