New true crime drama coming to screens next month looks unmissable

Stephen Porzio

The BBC series stars Sheridan Smith and Stephen Merchant.

The BBC has released a first trailer for its highly-anticipated new true crime drama focusing on the crimes of British convicted serial killer Stephen Port.

Originally named The Barking Murders, the series is now titled Four Lives and will be told from the point of view of the families and friends of the killer’s victims Anthony Walgate, Gabriel Kovari, Daniel Whitworth and Jack Taylor.

Ahead of its premiere next month, the BBC says the show will focus on the friends and familes’ “fight to uncover the truth about what had happened to their lost sons, brothers and loved ones in the face of a now widely condemned police investigation”.

Port will be played in the series by a cast against type Stephen Merchant (Extras), while Sheridan Smith (The Moorside) will play Sarah Sak, the mother of Anthony Walgate.

The cast also includes Jaime Winstone (Dead Set), Rufus Jones (Home) and Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful), with Neil McKay (Appropriate Adult) writing and David Blair (Accused) directing the three-part programme.

Four Lives’ first episode will premiere at 9pm on Monday, 3 January on BBC One, with the following episodes to air at the same time on Tuesday, 4 January and Wednesday, 5 January.
