It’s also one of the best movies of the decade so far.
Nicolas Cage made headlines this week with the news that he is considering retiring from movies.
During an interview to promote his acclaimed new comedy fantasy Dream Scenario, he told Uproxx that he is contracted to appear in three or four more films but added:
“I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say: ‘Adios.'”
This would be a crying shame as the Oscar-winner has done some of his best work in recent years. A perfect example of this is 2021’s drama thriller Pig, which is airing on TV tonight.
One of Nicolas Cage’s best movies is on TV tonight
Cage stars in the movie as Rob, a former chef living a reclusive existence deep in the Oregon wilderness who supports himself by foraging for truffles with the help of his beloved pig.
However, one night Rob is attacked by assailants who steal the animal – leading Rob to return to the city he once called home in an effort to get it back.
What begins as essentially “John Wick but with a pig instead of a dog” quickly evolves into a beautiful and haunting meditation on love, grief and regrets as we learn more about Rob’s past as he embarks on this odyssey to retrieve the animal.
The film also sees Cage give one of his very best performances as this intense, quiet man who you never doubt has this incredible well of emotions lurking just beneath his tough exterior.
And if you don’t believe us, Pig holds a near perfect 97% Rotten Tomatoes score – making it Cage’s highest rated movie on the website.
Airing on Film4 on Wednesday at 9pm, you can check out the trailer for Pig right here:
