Netflix clarify stance on The Notebook after ending causes confusion amongst viewers

Interesting.

The Notebook is an absolute classic.

It has the power to turn the most macho of men into an absolute softie in a matter of seconds, and it tells a brilliant (if not a little bit depressing) love story.

And although the movie has some funny moments, some passionate moments, and some heart-breaking moments, the ending is often the most talked about thing about the film.

But the ending that you remember may not be the one that you’ll see if you watch it on Netflix.

In case you haven’t seen The Notebook, here’s how it goes:

The story is narrated in the present day by an elderly man to a fellow nursing home patient, before we realise that he is just telling the story of his relationship with the now elderly woman, which she can’t remember due to her dementia.

In the movie’s original ending, the elderly couple embrace in bed as she finally remembers the narrator as the man she loves, before they die in each other’s arms.

But not in the Netflix edition…

In the Netflix edition, the final shot of the couple dead in bed together is replaced with a slightly more ambiguous one of birds flying over a lake.

As you might imagine, it drew quite a reaction.

While some fans actually enjoyed the change:

Netflix have since moved to clarify the issue, saying that they they did not edit the ending, that the version they were supplied with had a different ending and that they were going to get to the bottom of it as soon as possible.
