EXCLUSIVE: The stars of Ocean’s 8 reveal which female director they want to direct Ocean’s 9

Rory Cashin

Some VERY interesting choices here…

The original Ocean’s movies – the ones with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, etc. – were all financially successful when they were released over a decade ago. Ocean’s Eleven opened to $38 million at the US box office, Twelve opened to $39 million, and Thirteen opened to $36 million, and they all ended up massively profitable.

Jump forward to this summer, and Ocean’s Eight has beat them all, opening to $41 million at the US box office, despite costing significantly less money to produce – Eight’s production budget was $70 million, while Twelve’s was $110 million.

This financial success, coupled with the fact that the movie is getting some decent reviews, means that an Ocean’s Nine is inevitable, and all eyes are on which famous actress would be joining the eightsome for their next heist.

We here in JOE and Her were lucky enough to sit down with some of the stars of the movie, we had to ask which female director would they like to see behind the camera for the next one.

Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit) did a good job of directing and co-writing Eight, but we reckon a female leader could push Nine from being just good into potentially great, and the ladies seem to agree.

Sandra Bullock: “There’s a lot of good ones out there. Did you see that movie, Edge Of Seventeen? That was fantastic. She’s [Kelly Fremon Craig] amazing, and she also wrote it, I believe. Wrote it and directed it.”

Cate Blanchett: “There’s a young Farsi director [Ana Lily Amirpour] who is really great, who did a film called A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, about the vampire in Iran. Amazing, amazing.”

Sarah Paulson: “Oh, I don’t know. I don’t know any women who are directors. (laughs) No, I’m just kidding!”

Cate Blanchett: “It depends on the script!”

Sarah Paulson: “It does!”

Sandra Bullock: “It just has to be someone who loves women, how’s that?”

Sarah Paulson: “Yeah!”

Cate Blanchett: “Panache!”

You can check out the rest of our interview with the leading ladies right here, where we also discuss who they think was the coolest actress in Hollywood history, before they all attempt to do an Irish accent, with … mixed results.

Ocean’s 8 is in Irish cinemas from Monday 18 June, and you can check out the trailer for the movie below.

Also, JOE and The Big Reviewski will be hosting a heist-themed movie quiz in association with Warner Brothers, and you can check out the full details for that right here.
