One of the most-anticipated 2021 horrors and 7 more movies and shows to watch this week

Rory Cashin

Some big new spooky movies to enjoy in the cinema and at home this weekend…

We’ve a bit of a Halloween special (considering the week we’re in and all) for you, so we hope you like spooky movies and shows!

The latest episode of The Big Reviewski can be watched in full below or you can skip to the cinema reviews (4:03), home entertainment recommendations (13:40), and classic re-watches (20:10).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 29 October.

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO

Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) goes full horror with this sorta-time-travelling thriller about a young woman (Thomasin Mackenzie) who finds herself psychically linked to a woman from the 60s (Anya-Taylor Joy) who happened to live in the same apartment she did decades earlier… and may have met a very violent end.

ANTLERS

Guillermo Del Toro brings his horror-producing weight to this unsettling creepy thriller about a teacher (Keri Russell) and her sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) in a small mining town in America who suspect a young boy is having a difficult time at home, but soon discover the terror there is much worse than anyone could have imagined.

PASSING

Before arriving on Netflix on 10 November, this powerful drama will play in select Irish cinemas.

The directorial debut of Rebecca Hall, it focuses on two friends (Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson) and the idea of “passing” – i.e. black people who attempt to pass as white in order to avoid racial injustices and attacks.

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

ARMY OF THIEVES

The prequel to the Netflix zombie hit Army of the Dead, but with less zombies and more safe-cracking.

The master thief from the original movie (Matthias Schweighöfer) is drafted in to a group of world-class criminals for a once-in-a-lifetime heist.

Army of Thieves arrives on Netflix on Friday, 29 October.

FAIRFAX

What if you suddenly found yourself living in the coolest neighbourhood on the planet?

That is the set-up of this new animated comedy, which is definitely giving us some BoJack Horseman vibes, not least because of the erratic voice cast list, which ranges from Rob Delaney to Billy Porter to David Strathairn to Shania Twain…

All eight episodes of Fairfax arrive on Prime Video on Friday, 29 October.

THE CONJURING: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT

The third outing in The Conjuring movies (not including any of the spin-offs), it sees the return of paranormal investigation couple Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) looking into the first documented case of possession being used as a defence during a murder trial in America.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is available to watch on NOW from Friday, 29 October.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section, which will be focusing on spooky movies for the month of October…

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – THE SHINING

Cillian Murphy reckons this is the scariest movie ever made, and who are we to argue with Cillian Murphy?

The Shining is available to watch on NOW right now.

Eoghan’s Pick – WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERERABBIT

The legendary duo bring their unique brand of comedy to this family-friendly Halloween favourite.
