Movies & TV

12th Aug 2021

One of the best thrillers of the last ten years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Prisoners

This 2013 thriller starring Hugh Jackman is incredibly tense.

In the mood to watch something this Thursday night? Why not chill on the sofa with one of these fine movies airing on TV this evening.

Prisoners – Sky Witness – 9pm

In our pick for tonight, Hugh Jackman plays a man who takes matters into his own hands after his daughter goes missing. At the same time, the police (led by Jake Gyllenhaal) pursue multiple leads.

Acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s first American movie, Prisoners’ tense atmosphere and labyrinthine plot makes it a must-watch for fans of mysteries and crime-thrillers.

Without spoiling, what begins as an exploration of how far a father would go to protect his loved ones twists and turns over the movie’s two-and-a-half-hour runtime into something more ambitious and morally complex – before an incredibly emotional and satisfying climax ties everything together.

The Italian Job – ITV 4 – 9pm

Michael Caine stars in this iconic 60’s crime caper about a plan to steal a gold shipment from the streets of Turin by creating a traffic jam.

Kingsman: The Secret Service – Film Four – 9pm

Taron Egerton and Colin Firth kick ass in this very fun and violent send-up of Bond flicks. A prequel is on the way soon.

Meet Me in St Louis – BBC Four – 9.30pm

This acclaimed 40’s musical stars Judy Garland and focuses on a year in the life of a turn-of-the-century family.

The Losers – Sky One – 10pm

In this DC comic book adaptation, a CIA special forces team is betrayed and left for dead by their superiors, galvanising them to mount an offensive on the CIA.

Action-packed, funny and well-acted, The Losers is very underrated and deserves a revisit – particularly given most of its stars (Chris Evans, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana) have gone on to have greater success in other comic book inspired fare.

Hollow Man – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

The great Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, RoboCop) directs this violent update of The Invisible Man starring Kevin Bacon.

Don’t Breathe – Film Four – 11.40pm

In this slick and twisty horror-thriller, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man (Avatar’s Stephen Lang) who isn’t as helpless as he seems.

Don’t Breathe 2 is out in cinemas in Ireland tomorrow. So, those interested in seeing the sequel might want to check out the original again.
