Movies & TV

16th Jul 2021

One of the most entertaining thrillers of the last five years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

This 2018 flick saw Bridesmaids and Spy director Paul Feig try his hand at the thriller genre with fun results.

Finally, the weekend is here. As such, why not shake off the stresses of the past few days by checking out one of the great movies on the box tonight.

Below are JOE’s recommendations for this evening.

Miss Sloane – RTÉ Two – 9pm

In the high-stakes world of political power brokers, Elizabeth Sloane is the most sought-after and formidable lobbyist in D.C. But when taking on the most powerful opponent of her career, she finds winning may come at too high a price.

The great Jessica Chastain stars in this well-reviewed political thriller from 2016.

Central Intelligence – E4 – 9pm

After he reconnects with an awkward pal (Dwayne Johnson) from high school through Facebook, a mild-mannered accountant (Kevin Hart) is lured into the world of international espionage.

This buddy action-comedy flick also boasts supporting turns from Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and Ozark’s Jason Bateman.

Ride Along 2 – Virgin Media One – 10pm

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube return as a bickering odd couple in this sequel to buddy-cop action-comedy Ride Along.

A Simple Favour – BBC One – 10.35pm

Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) is a single mother with a parenting vlog who befriends Emily (Blake Lively), a secretive upper-class woman who has a child at the same elementary school. When Emily goes missing, Stephanie takes it upon herself to investigate.

Our pick for this evening, A Simple Favour is excellently twisty and at times, deliriously twisted – making it a must for fans of similarly stylish mystery thrillers like Basic Instinct and Gone Girl.

Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy), writer Jessica Sharzer (Nerve) and stars Kendrick and Lively manage to keep the movie for most of its running time rooted in some reality, while at the same time adding some killer jokes and a layer of winking humour. As a result, the movie strikes the right balance between serious and fun.

Paul – Comedy Central – 11.15pm

Popular movie duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost star as two comic book buffs who take a road trip to Area 51, where they run into an alien named Paul (Seth Rogen).

With federal agents in pursuit, the two inept geeks must quickly find a way to return the alien to his spaceship.
