In 2017, details began to emerge of a new Netflix-produced documentary focusing on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The eight-part docuseries will explore the story of the missing three-year-old and interview key investigators from the case in the run-up to the 12th anniversary of the disappearance.
Madeleine went missing while on holidays with her parents and two siblings in Praia de Luz in Portugal in 2007 and the case made international headlines.
The story of her disappearance still makes the news to this day and while there has been reported sightings of Madeleine, she has never been found.
Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have said they chose not to participate in the documentary despite being asked to take part my the film makers.
“We are aware that Netflix are planning to screen a documentary in March 2019 about Madeleine’s disappearance,” they said in a statement.
“The production company told us that they were making the documentary and asked us to participate.
“We did not see – and still do not see – how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it.
“Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the programme.
“We will not be making any further statements or giving interviews regarding this programme.”
