Pluribus, the new sci-fi series from Vince Gilligan (creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul), is finally streaming now on Apple TV+ and is earning rave reviews.
Already being compared to Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the show stars Better Call Saul breakout star Rhea Seehorn. She plays an author named Carol, one of only a handful of people on Earth immune to an unexplained new virus that transforms the world's population into content and optimistic citizens.
As such, it's up to Carol, described as "the most miserable person on Earth", to save the world "from happiness".
Gilligan's long-awaited follow-up to Better Call Saul, Pluribus currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics are praising the series for its "ambitious" and "existential" story, as well as for giving Seehorn a long-overdue lead role showcase.
You can read a sample of some of these glowing write-ups below:
CBC News: "In short, get ready to have your whole life taken over."
Consequence: "This might be the best pandemic-related art we’ve gotten yet, because it comes at those themes from the most unexpected of angles, prying open the lingering trauma from those years to explore the deeper ways that time hurt us all."
Looper: "This is TV's next great show, and you won't want to miss it."
Seattle Times: "Gilligan, perhaps seeing something of himself in Carol as he attempts to tell a more ambitious story, raises a whole host of emotional and existential questions that transcend the show’s sci-fi trappings."
Vulture: "You may watch and wonder what it’s all building toward and what it’s all about, but by the time each episode ends, you’ll find yourself savouring the silence it gave you to think everything through."
