A Reddit user has calculated which Star Wars film is officially the most divisive

Kate Demolder

Makes sense.

It’s long been discussed, since the dawning of Star Wars films in the late seventies, which of the nine movies is the least divisive of all.

Many claim that their favourite is in fact the people’s favourite – but only one super fan has gone the distance and figured out which exactly is the least divisive film of the lot.

Reddit user TheNeptunianSloth took to the social news and discussion site to debate, in great detail, the most and least divisive films in the popular franchise.

They started the post by stating how The Last Jedi was deemed extremely divisive by the general public, and how that got them wondering about how discordant the other films in the franchise are.

The Reddit user tallied up the end result by heading over to film site IMDB, pulling the stats on the nine Star Wars films and then calculating the standard deviation from each film’s set of ratings which is basically a way to measure how people have responded to the films by looking at the average, and how it deviates from that.

TheNeptunianSloth explained the system on the post itself:

“What I did was I calculated the standard deviation from each film’s set of ratings, which is a way of measuring how much the numbers, on average, deviate from the arithmetic mean of the set.

“A typical standard deviation will generally be between 1 and 3. So the higher the standard deviation, the more divisive the film is.”

After the final numbers were calculated, here is the list of the nine Star Wars films from most divisive to least divisive.

  1. The Last Jedi – 2.696
  2. The Phantom Menace – 2.062
  3. Attack of the Clones – 1.914
  4. Revenge of the Sith – 1.837
  5. Return of the Jedi – 1.695
  6. The Force Awakens – 1.612
  7. A New Hope – 1.602
  8. The Empire Strikes Back – 1.517
  9. Rogue One – 1.405

Upon finalising the list, TheNeptunianSloth admitted to being surprised by the film which took the bottom spot, i.e. the most likeable, Rogue One.

“The most interesting thing to me was that Rogue One appears to be the least divisive film in the entire saga.

“I admit I expected Empire to take that spot, but it does also make sense that there is less love and less hate at the same time for that film, meaning that people generally agree that it wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, but not that bad either,” he added.

Who knew all those years of primary school maths could come in handy someday?
