It’s a good week to be a Resident Evil fan.

Today – Friday 25 January – marks the release of the long-awaited Resident Evil 2 remake, a game which has been hailed as setting an unbelievably high standard for such reboot projects.

It looks seriously impressive, and we’re definitely not sitting here cursing our editor for making us work instead of spending all day getting lost and scared in that police station all over again.

But that’s not all, zombie fans. Now we have the news that Netflix is set to further revive the franchise in the form of a brand new TV show.

Deadline has the scoop, with Constantin Film – who previously housed the film series, itself set for its own reanimation – heading things up once again.

Details are scarce enough – there’s no showrunner in place yet – but the report indicates that the TV series will expand the RE universe while building on its “existing mythology”.

The plan seems to be to adapt the original Resident Evil, which would give the producers a good chance to properly explore the Spencer Mansion in ways that the first movie failed to.

The show will also “explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus”, which sounds like business as usual.

Fans will be hoping that the IP is treated with respect. If done right, it could make for something to rival The Haunting of Hill House. If done wrong, well…

Yeah, let’s avoid that.

As noted, plans are also in place to resurrect Resident Evil as a bona fide box office franchise once more, with director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) attached.
