An action movie that’s a mix of Phone Booth and Speed is on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The film stars an action legend.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 8 January) is Retribution, a 2023 action thriller starring Liam Neeson.

A remake of the well-liked 2015 Spanish film of the same name, Neeson plays a husband and father named Matt who, while driving his kids (Jack Champion and Lilly Aspell) to school, receives a call from an unknown number with a distorted voice.

The mysterious caller says that there is a bomb under Matt’s seat and that it will be detonated if Matt doesn’t complete a series of increasingly dangerous tasks.

Also featuring amongst its cast Arian Moayed (Succession), Embeth Davidtz (Matilda), Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket) and Noma Dumezweni (The Undoing), Retribution was directed by B-movie maestro Nimród Antal (Predators, Vacancy).

While the film earned mixed reviews, Neeson’s involvement and the fact that the premise is basically Phone Booth meets Speed mean the action thriller is probably worth a look.

The movie airs tonight on Sky Showcase at 9pm. It can also be streamed on NOW Cinema and Sky Cinema.
