Ricky Gervais confirms Season 2 of After Life is set to be released on Netflix in spring

The beloved show is coming back.

If ever someone is looking forward to kicking back over the Christmas season and relaxing, it's Ricky Gervais.

Granted, there's a bit of irony in that sentence as the creator of The Office and Extras is a devout atheist, but the comedian definitely deserves a break over the coming weeks.

Aside from his upcoming duties presenting the Golden Globes, Gervais is back on the road with his new tour Super Nature, taking in dates all over the world.

2019 has been a great year for Gervais as his latest show, After Life, has become a global success since its release in March.

If you haven't seen it, the show revolves around Tony (Gervais) and his seemingly perfect life. However, after his wife suddenly dies, Tony changes.

After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it's like a super power - not caring about himself or anyone else - but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.

During a recent interview on The Graham Norton Show, Gervais spoke about the reaction to the show and his plans for the release of Season 2.

"I've never had a reaction like it and with social media now, you hear about it. It has been overwhelming and it's the type of reaction as well. People have been coming up to me on the street and saying 'Oh, I lost my mum, or I lost my buddy'. I'm there thinking 'Oh my God, everyone is grieving'," he said.

With filming now complete on the new episodes, Gervais said that he plans on releasing Season 2 of After Life in spring 2020.

When asked about the scheduled release date, he said: "That will be next spring. I'm editing now and I'll finish that after Christmas. Then it takes two months to put it into, like, 120 languages. That's why it takes so long."

At present, nothing official has been confirmed by Netflix but we're very happy to hear that the show is now deep in the post-production process.

While the plot details for the new episodes are a secret, we do know that the dog doesn't die.  Truth be told, that's all we need to know.

Season 1 of After Life is currently available to watch on Netflix.
