From the director of Greenland and Shot Caller, the action flick was filmed in Ireland and stars an Irish actress.

Shelter, the 2026 action movie starring Jason Statham, has just been added to Prime Video.

From director Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen, Greenland, Shot Caller), the film follows Michael Mason (Statham), a former MI6 assassin now in hiding from the agency. Keeping a low profile, he lives alone on a remote island in the Scottish Outer Hebrides.

Every week, Mason receives supplies from teenager Jessie (Irish actress Bodhi Rae Breathnach - Hamnet, the upcoming Werwulf) and her uncle (Michael Shaeffer, Bodyguard), whom Mason served with in the Royal Marines. When a storm kills her uncle and throws Jessie overboard, the former assassin rescues her and they bond as she recovers at his home.

When Mason is subsequently captured on camera buying medical supplies for Jessie, his former MI6 handler (Oscar-nominee Bill Nighy, Living) dispatches operatives to kill both him and the girl, forcing the pair to go on the run together.

Co-starring Daniel Mays (Line of Duty), Harriet Walter (Succession), and Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17), Shelter was partly filmed in Ireland.

Released in cinemas last January, the action flick earned mostly positive write-ups from critics.

The consensus from reviewers is that the movie boasts two great lead turns by Breathnach and Statham, a top-class supporting cast, and exciting fight sequences - elements which help to elevate the film's familiar story.

Audiences appeared to have loved Shelter too. The movie holds a high 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

You can read a sample of the positive critic reviews for Shelter below:

The Arts Desk: "Formulaic and utterly Statham-esque though it is, Shelter is a tight and punchy thriller, directed with no-frills efficiency by Ric Roman Waugh…"

Common Sense Media: "Co-star Breathnach's emotional range - and the fatherly tenderness she pulls from Statham - elevates an otherwise standard-issue script."

Observer (UK): "The plot is thin, the dialogue rudimentary. But the action is glorious. Statham’s deadly grace as a fighter has rarely been better showcased."

Original Cin: "A standard action-adventure (assassin saves orphan) is elevated by Statham doing what he does (be gruff and murderous), by stuntman-turned-director Rick Roman Waugh’s viscerally physical style, and by child-in-distress Bodhi Rae Breathnach."

Radio Times: "It's a shame that the Bourne-lite plot is underwritten, but the support cast - including Harriet Walter, Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie and Daniel Mays - are far better than you might normally find in such a bruising action vehicle."

TheWrap: "Jason Statham knows how to Jason Statham, and as usual, he Jason Stathams Jason Stathamly."
