Significant Other, a decent and underseen sci-fi horror thriller, is airing on TV tonight (Wednesday, 24 September).
Written and directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen (whose action flick Novocaine was a bit of a hit earlier this year), the 2022 movie stars Jake Lacy (The White Lotus) and Maika Monroe (Longlegs).
The pair play Harry and Ruth, an unmarried couple who have been dating for six years. An avid outdoorsman, Harry convinces Ruth to accompany him on a backpacking trip through the woods of the Pacific Northwest.
While the getaway was supposed to be idyllic, with Harry planning on proposing to Ruth, things take a dark turn when the pair realise "they may not be alone".
To reveal any more about Significant Other would do a disservice to the audience. This is a thriller that really delights in upending viewers' expectations of how it will play out.
Indeed, the film takes some major swings narratively and tonally, some of which we'd argue are handled more successfully than others.
This issue aside, Significant Other has much to like about it, particularly Lacy and Monroe's performances, the movie's blend of everyday human drama and genre storytelling, its atmospheric setting, and its inventive special effects.
So, if you're looking for a cool sci-fi horror thriller ahead of Halloween that is under 90 minutes long, this could fit the bill.
You can read a sample of some other positive reviews for Significant Other below:
615 Films: "Kind of a B-movie riff on Annihilation... Maika Monroe is already an elite Scream Queen, and Jake Lacy is born to play a part like this."
Dread Central: "This tense thriller subverts expectations early and often."
Everything's Interesting: "In short, it's a bonkers delight."
Oregonian: "If you’re looking to get in the Halloween spirit by watching something haunting, Significant Other definitely serves up some gore. But you might have to stifle some giggles while trying to get into the scary mood."
San Jose Mercury News: "Never overstays its welcome and builds up to its shocks by having us get to know Harry and Ruth before it turns the tables on the audience."
Significant Other is airing on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Channel 4 at 2.15am.
The movie will also be available to stream on Channel 4's website from Thursday, 25 September.
