Have you got a case of the hump day blues?

Not to worry as you can have a nice evening chilling on the sofa with one of these fine movies airing on TV this Wednesday evening (24 November).

Hanna – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Ireland’s own Saoirse Ronan plays the titular teenage assassin in this awesome action-thriller with a class soundtrack from The Chemical Brothers.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome – ITV 4 – 9pm

The third entry in the iconic post-apocalyptic action franchise, Beyond Thunderdome is notable for featuring a co-lead turn from Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll Tina Turner.

Patriots Day – Film Four – 9pm

Mark Wahlberg stars in this action-thriller about the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013 and the subsequent terrorist manhunt.

Small Axe: Mangrove – TG4 – 10.30pm

For those unaware, Small Axe is a wonderful anthology series of movies from filmmaker Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Hunger) released in 2020 based on the real-life experiences of London’s West Indian community from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Earning a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the Mangrove entry focuses on the true story of the Mangrove Nine, who clashed with London police in 1970.

The trial that followed was the first judicial acknowledgment of behaviour motivated by racial hatred within the Metropolitan Police.

Boasting authentic and rich period detail, an excellent soundtrack of era-appropriate needle drops and incredible performances from the entire cast – including Black Panther’s Letitia Wright – Mangrove works as a gripping courtroom drama.

But it’s also an unflinching depiction of the struggles West Indian immigrants faced in the UK at the time, while at the same time showing how a vibrant community came together to fight these injustices.

Gangster Squad – ITV 4 – 11.10pm

A very watchable crime flick in which a group of cops in 1940s LA (including Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling) work to bring down notorious gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn).

Don’t Breathe – Film Four – 11.40pm

One of the best horrors of recent years, Don’t Breathe sees a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man (Avatar’s Stephen Lang) who isn’t as helpless as he seems.
