These before and after pictures are astonishing.

With pictures surfacing last week of Liam Neeson looking very thin and gaunt, we look at other body transformations by actors which stopped us in our tracks. Matthew McConaughey - Dallas Buyers Club Matthew McConaughey is a fantastic actor and his performance in True Detective will live long in the memory. His transformation from buff, handsome Hollywood lead man into Ron Woodroof, a cowboy from Dallas with AIDS was pretty startling. He lost nearly 50 pounds to play the role and went on to pick up an Oscar for Best Actor Christian Bale - The Machinist Like McConaughey, Bale lost an incredible amount of weight to play his role of machinist Trevor Reznik. He lost an incredible 60 pounds for the role. Charlize Theron - Monster Charlize Theron is one of the most stunning looking women on the planet. She gained 30 pounds to take on the role of Aileen Wuornos, a serial-killer from Florida. She also had prosthetic teeth fitted and became almost unrecognisable as she played the role which won her an Oscar. Jake Gyllenhaal - Southpaw This one has been doing the rounds recently as Southpaw has just opened in cinemas. Gyllenhaal plays the part of a boxer and got himself into incredible shape. Cameron Diaz - Being John Malkovich Cameron Diaz is another beautiful actress who underwent a very severe transformation to take on the role of Lotte Schwartz in the movie Being John Malkovich. Gone were the trademark blonde locks to be replaced with a big ginger afro-like do. Stick on a pair of glasses and she is barely recognisable. John Travolta - Hairspray John Travolta went through a huge transformation to become female character Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. The Pulp Fiction star is completely unrecognisable in the film. Mila Kunis - Oz: The Great and Powerful Another stunningly beautiful actress completely transformed for the sake of a movie. Mile Kunis landed the part of Theodora for the film and had to forego her beautiful looks to play the part of the witch.
