Spanish TV show hilariously mistakes Irish comedy sketch for real life

The sketch in question was posted on Tuesday and is titled: "Are these the most sunburnt men in Ireland?"

Inspired by Ireland's ongoing heatwave, it saw JOE stars Ross McCarney, Ryan Carrick and Dan Casey play dangerously sunburnt Irish men.

The trio wind up competing in a "Most Sunburnt Men in Ireland" competition, which is being judged by a doctor (a white lab coat-wearing Peter Cooney), who called in sick from surgery just to be there.

The following day, JOE received a message from one of our followers, Dermot Boyle, who - while in Madrid - spotted the sketch being discussed on a Spanish morning talk show.

The hosts could not believe how red the JOE lads were. Due to our limited Spanish knowledge, we are not sure if they knew the clip was a joke.

The Spanish hosts also seem to have created an entirely new backstory for the sketch. You can watch their comments below:

According to our translation, one of the hosts says: "The sun came out a little in Ireland. They aren't that used to it there.

"And a beer festival was being held in a beer garden, so typical of there.

"Right after, they brought out this Pantone colour-o-metre to see which skin was the most sunburnt.

"Mind you, they took into account not just the redness, but also the marks left by the caps, the glasses, the T-shirt tan lines.

"And all this to raise awareness that it is very important to protect yourself from the sun and wear sunscreen."

Another host adds: "This is heading towards a melanoma and very quickly," while a third states: "Yes, but I like the idea of 'let's find the reddest guy in the whole country'."

In an exclusive statement to JOE, Irish comedian Ross McCarney said of his newfound Spanish fame: "It is gas because it was not real, but they thought that it was. Therein lies the humour."

His fellow Comedy JOE all-star Ryan Carrick added: "I thought it was real. I didn't realise we were filming a sketch... Therein lies the humour."

Peter Cooney, from Tallaght, when approached for comment, asked: "Am I considered a medical expert in Madrid?"
