'Stylish, amusing, and action-packed, it’s a stand-alone tale of spectacular proportions.'

A live-action series spin-off of the Oscar-winning movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Cage plays Ben Reilly, a seasoned, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York.

After a deeply personal tragedy, he is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero: The Spider.

Gleeson, meanwhile, plays Finn Byrne, an Irish mob boss with connections to Reilly's past who has been the target of multiple assassination attempts.

Spider-Noir was directed in part by Harry Bradbeer (Enola Holmes, Fleabag), with Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher) serving as co-showrunners.

Uziel and Lightfoot developed the eight-part show with the Academy Award-winning team behind Project Hail Mary and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

What's also noteworthy about Spider-Noir is that Prime Video has released the series in two versions: 'Authentic Black & White', à la the old noir films the show is paying homage to, or 'True-Hue Full Colour'.

For what it is worth, the streaming service encouraged critics to watch one episode in each format to enjoy the full experience.

Praised for its performances, style and ambition, Spider-Noir currently holds a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score.

You can read a sample of those glowing reviews below:

Consequence: "No matter how you choose to watch it, Spider-Noir hews closely to the familiar tropes of the detective tale, but it never feels like parody. It just feels like the answer to the question "What if someone made a 1930s noir about a P.I. with spider powers?"

The Daily Beast: "Stylish, amusing, and action-packed, it’s a stand-alone tale of spectacular proportions."

Empire: "A big swing — oh, yes — that pays off from start to finish, this is an irresistible concoction, an utterly insane stew that somehow makes perfect sense. It is total joy."

RogerEbert.com: "Often, we’re reminded why Cage is one of the most electric, polarising, and inspired actors of his generation."

San Francisco Chronicle: "Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, whose work on the Spider-Verse films helped redefine cinematic animation, bring the same inventive energy here."

TheWrap: "Whether your thing is old, existential crime movies, four-colour fantasy magazines or TV that aspires to artistry as well as entertainment, Spider-Noir has the goods."
