Stephen Porzio

The buddy cop flick holds an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 19 September) is Stakeout, the beloved 1987 buddy cop action comedy starring Emilio Estevez (The Breakfast Club) and Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws).

The film sees the pair play police detectives Chris Lecce (Dreyfuss) and Bill Reimers (Estevez) who are on the hunt for escaped prisoner Richard ‘Stick’ Montgomery (Aidan Quinn).

“When the trail dries up, the pair are put on around-the-clock surveillance of the fugitive’s former girlfriend, Maria (Madeleine Stowe, 12 Monkeys,” the plot synopsis reads.

“What starts as a boring assignment monitoring the woman with binoculars quickly turns into something more exciting when romance – and Maria’s gun-toting ex – arrive on the scene.”

Directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, WarGames), Stakeout holds an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics singling out for praise the chemistry between Dreyfuss and Estevez, as well as the film’s blend of action, comedy and romance.

It was also a big hit at the box office and got a sequel six years later titled Another Stakeout.

The original is airing on Comedy Central at 9pm. It is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play and the Sky Store.
