The film is earning comparisons to M3GAN, which is also on Netflix.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been all the rage in the movies lately, thanks to the likes of AfrAId, The Creator, M3GAN (and its upcoming spin-off SOULM8TE), Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and more.
Adding to this wave of films is the new Megan Fox-starring sci-fi thriller Subservience, which has just been added to Netflix and sees the Jennifer’s Body and Transformers actress play a robot helper turned seductive killer.
The plot synopsis reads:
“Megan Fox stars as Alice, a lifelike artificially intelligent android, who has the ability to take care of any family and home. Looking for help with the housework, a struggling father named Nick (Michele Morrone, Netflix’s 365 Days trilogy of movies) purchases Alice after his wife becomes sick.
“Alice suddenly becomes self-aware and wants everything her new family has to offer, starting with the affection of her owner — and she’ll kill to get it.”
In the trailer for Subservience, Alice is shown seducing Nick while his wife, Maggie (Madeline Zima, Heroes), is in hospital.
This is before the robot grows jealous when Maggie returns home and a regretful Nick starts to shun Alice.
Directed by S.K Dale, who has re-teamed with Fox after they made the excellent thriller Till Death together, Subservience has received mixed reviews – with some claiming it doesn’t do a lot new with its common premise.
Others, however, have praised it for Fox’s central performance, its B-movie thrills and its special effects.
You can read a sample of these positive reviews below:
DrumDrums: “Despite its budgetary limitations, Megan Fox gives a mesmerising performance in this AI thriller akin to Hand That Rocks the Cradle.”
In Review Online: “At its heart, Subservience’s economical yet well-executed production (with a few sequences of spectacular VFX) and bold eclectic approach… pleasantly recalls the entertaining and adrenaline-filled simplicities of campy ’80s and ’90s DTV B-movies.”
Keith & the Movies: “Its story is built around a simple and well-worn premise (mankind creates A.I. only for A.I. to turn on mankind). But it’s the fun it has within that premise that makes “Subservience” an entertaining time-passer.”
Movie Files: “They said let’s make a slightly more erotic adult thriller version of Blumhouse’s M3GAN but let’s actually put Megan Fox in it, and you what, it’s not that bad.”
Subservience is streaming on Netflix in Ireland, the UK and the US right now.
