Succession viewers notice concerning character details in latest episode

Simon Kelly

Roman Succession season 4, episode 5

Spoilers for Succession season four, episode five ahead.

We’re worried about Roman…

In the latest episode of Succession, titled Kill List, we see the Roy siblings and the Waystar team head over to Norway to meet Lukas Matsson ahead of the potential GoJo takeover deal. It’s been a few days since Logan’s death but already Shiv, Kendall and Roman are plunged into some major company decisions.

All of these decisions could have been left until after Logan’s funeral but Matsson used the patriarch’s death as a power play and forced the Roys’ hand to make a decision as soon as possible.

Roman, who claimed he had pre-grieved in the aftermath of his dad’s passing, ultimately broke down at the end of the episode, venting his anger at Lukas after he insulted Logan. However, some eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a number of details which suggest he’s in a far worse place then he was letting on before his outburst.

One, and probably the most obvious, detail is that Roman seems to be wearing a blue sweater resembling one worn multiple times on-screen by Logan. It’s a sweet but very sad nod to the late Waystar CEO, one that would suggest Roman is seeking comfort in grief.

The sweater also harks back to the first episode of Succession when Roman tasks Greg to fetch him one of his dad’s sweaters after he suffers a stroke.

Roman is showing some worrying signs in the latest episode of Succession

Another shot in the episode sees Roman aboard the private jet where Logan had died just a few days before. We see him look back at the same doorway his dad was lying in front of as he was saying goodbye to him on the phone.

Clearly Roman is reliving the trauma of losing his father in the exact place it happened, which can’t be good for anyone, especially for the son seemingly closest to his dad towards the end.

Another concerning detail surrounding Roman in this episode is how he unpacks a large bottle of prescription medicine as he talks to his brother on the phone. Not a big deal on its own, however, when you include everything else going on, it’s a worrying feature.

As Roman finally decides he can’t take any more goading from Matsson about his dad, he utters the lines, “I’m gone, I’m dead, it’s over for me,” while continuing his rant towards the Swede.

All in all the small details surrounding Roman in this episode could be a hint towards something much more serious than the front-facing feelings of the usually brash and bold Roy sibling.

Succession Season 4 Episode 6 – titled “Living+” – will be available to watch in Ireland and the UK from 2am on Monday, 1 May. Check out HBO’s teaser of the next episode below.
