Suicide Squad was a box office hit, making €745million globally in 2015.
Still, the film was panned widely by critics, and it currently holds a paltry 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
There are higher hopes for the follow-up though. For starters, the DC universe is starting to make some headway (Aquaman was a massive success at the box office and wasn’t hated by critics), and the hire of James Gunn as director will have Marvel fans very excited.
Gunn was the man behind the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films before he was controversially dropped from the third film over decades-old tweets.
And that’s not the only major change. It has been confirmed that Will Smith will not be reprising his role as Deadshot, one of the main baddies-turned-goodies from the first film — and the one who famously said “So we’re some kind of… suicide squad?” in the trailer.
Deadline has reported that the exit was amicable, and that it came down scheduling more than anything. Little has been confirmed about the cast for the sequel, but Margot Robbie seems to be locked in to her role as Harley Quinn for the long haul.
She’s already set to reprise that role in the upcoming spin-off film Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which is coming out in early 2020.
Suicide Squad 2 isn’t set to drop until August 2021, six years after the original.
