The Galway Film Fleadh is taking place next month, and one of the buzziest titles of the announced line-up is Sunphlowers, a new drama starring Patrick Bergin (Sleeping with the Enemy).
The film follows Catherine (Anne McCrudden), a woman in her late 60s, in the wake of her husband's death. As she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, she uncovers a web of secrets and devastation that force her to reevaluate her life.
Bergin - also known for his role in Patriot Games - can be spotted in the first trailer for Sunphlowers. He plays Tony, who appears to be a man with whom Catherine forms a connection amidst her grief.
Also part of the cast is Irish music legend Jerry Fish, as well as Abigail O'Regan (Spellbound) and Paul McQuaid (Fair City).
Shot on location in Fingal in Dublin, Sunphlowers is written and directed by Dave Byrne and also features music by Sibéal Ni Chasaide.
"Loss is a universal experience. At some point, everyone faces the death of a parent, grandparent, or partner. This shared reality is why Sunphlowers will resonate with many, regardless of demographic," a statement about the film reads.
"The central theme revolves around overcoming grief and rediscovering one’s identity, highlighting the journey toward healing and self-acceptance."
Already being dubbed as "one to watch out for" at this year's Galway Film Fleadh, Sunphlowers will have its world premiere at the festival on 10 July, before getting a wide cinema release in late September 2025.
Other Irish movies set to be screened at the Fleadh between 8 - 13 July include Re-Creation, Jim Sheridan's film about Sophie Toscan du Plantier, Báite, an Irish-language murder-mystery, and Horsehoe, a family comedy-drama.
