Not exactly family-friendly…

There’s a broad spectrum when it comes to funny love scenes in movies. Some are intentionally funny or awkward, others are so horrifically awful that our only response is to burst into a fit of laughter.

Judging by what we’ve seen in The Happytime Murders trailer, it looks like our screens will once again be blessed by more hilarious love scenes. So far we’ve seen two puppets going at it in the back office, and an octopus giving a cow a reach-around. If it doesn’t win an Oscar, the whole thing is a sham. It’s hitting Irish cinemas on Monday, 27 August.

We’ve decided to take all 50 shades of funny into account for our list of the 10 funniest love scenes in film history. Something for every taste, but maybe don’t drop this one into the family WhatsApp.

10. Bridesmaids

As graceful as they come (sorry). First on our list is a comedy classic, with Kristen Wiig flailing her legs about and grunting like she’s continuously stubbing her toe on a couch. Seeing as this is bang on at the start of the movie, we knew we were on to a winner when we saw how hilariously awkward this whole scene was. Apparently, Jon Hamm’s name was kept from the opening credits to keep people from thinking it was a serious movie, but he absolutely steals this scene.

9. American Pie

The movie franchise that gave us so many laughs also forever changed the way we look at baked goods. Jim’s dad (Eugene Levy) deserves huge credit for the success of American Pie, and his expression when he comes home to find his son crumbling an apple pie will never cease being hilarious.

8. Ted

The first scene on our list to involve a cuddly teddy bear, Ted has earned its place as one of the finest comedies of the past decade. The scene where we find our furry friend in the back room of the grocery store excitedly telling his female partner “put your finger in the loop of my tag” gets our nod. Naturally, his antics earned him a promotion. We felt the same, so this hilarious scene easily makes our top 10.

7. Scary Movie

There are a few scenes we could point to in the Scary Movie series, such as the part where a woman has a one-night stand with an invisible ghost. The one we’ve opted for however involves Anna Ferris, excessive pubic hair, and a chainsaw. If you haven’t seen it, we’ll just let the clip do the talking.

6. Sausage Party

Look, it’s a movie involving a male sausage and a female bun. It also involved Seth Rogen, so we all knew what was going to happen. It’s been said since its release that we’ve been spared some of the more graphic parts of the scene in the final cut, but what we’re left with isn’t exactly tame. We’ll never look at blue cheese the same way again.

5. Sex Tape

In a world where romance is always portrayed on screen as a flawless, effortless endeavour, Sex Tape serves as a hilarious reminder of how awkward it can be. Once you’ve been married for 10 years, you can’t always expect your love life to be as intense as it always was. Plus, “instant boner-giver” is a compliment we’re sure anyone would be happy to receive.

4. Team America: World Police

It’s incredible the things you can get away with once your characters are either puppets or cartoons. Just because they look like children’s characters doesn’t mean they are. The creators of Team America are the guys behind South Park after all. Complete with the golden pickup line of “I promise I will never die,” the soundtrack alone to this scene is enough to make us chuckle every time we hear it.

3. MacGruber

As far as funny love scenes go, this effort from the creators of MacGruber is a masterpiece. The cheesy 80s music, the god-awful dirty talk, and the juxtaposition of going from soft romance to sweaty grunting is sensational. While the movie itself was a flop (some would say undeservedly so), this scene will never get old.

2. Anchorman

Possibly the most quotable comedy of the past 20 years. Ron Burgundy is no stranger to the opposite sex, and the scene when he and Veronica finally take a trip to Pleasure Town is amongst the most memorable. When in Rome…

1. The Room

There was only ever going to be one wiener. Tommy Wiseau created what many refer to as “the Citizen Kane of bad movies,” so we’re calling this iconic moment The Godfather of funny love scenes. The scene closest to our hearts is when when Tommy forever left his mark on Hollywood with gratuitous shots of his bare backside as he attempts to make love to his partner’s belly button, but we’re too chicken to show it to you. For now, here’s a taste of how this phenomenal movie deals with scenes of intimacy.

Sex. Murder. Puppets. The Happytime Murders is the outrageous adult comedy EVERYONE will be talking about this summer, taking puppets where they’ve never been before and providing huge laugh out loud moments.

It features a stellar comedy cast including Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks. Follow the movie on Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date.
