Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 18 November) is The 13th Warrior, the very underrated historical action flick from director John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator).
Based on a novel by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton titled Eaters of the Dead, the film is set in the 10th century and follows Ahmed ibn Fahdlan (Oscar-nominee Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory), a Muslim ambassador exiled from his homeland after falling in love with the king's wife.
He subsequently joins a group of Vikings, at first being treated indifferently by them, before gaining their respect.
"As they travel together, they learn of a legendary evil closing in and must unite to confront this formidable force," the plot synopsis reads.
Also co-starring screen legend Omar Sharif (Doctor Zhivago), alongside Diane Venora (Heat) and Tony Curran (Calibre), The 13th Warrior was a box office bomb upon release and earned mixed reviews from critics, many of whom criticised the movie for having a "thin plot".
However, we'd argue the film's lead turn by Banderas, its unique period setting, its lavish sets and its hard-hitting action sequences make it worth seeking out.
The 13th Warrior is airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend at 9pm. It's also streaming on Disney+.
