A remake of France’s The Bureau – widely considered one of the country’s best-ever shows – the English-language version on Paramount+ sees the Irish Oscar-nominee play Martian, a covert CIA agent.
The first season follows Martian as he is suddenly ordered to abandon his undercover work in Ethiopia after six years and return to the agency’s London base of operations.
His superiors (played by Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere) tell him to sever all ties he had in the African country. The agent, however, breaches protocol when Samia (Jodie Turner-Smith) - a woman whom he met and fell in love with in Ethiopia - appears in London.
Amidst all this, Martian is tasked with preparing a younger agent (Saura Lightfoot-Leon) for undercover work, and also becomes entangled in a top-secret operation the agency is running in Ukraine.
Boasting a star-studded cast (also including Dominic West, Hugh Bonneville, Katherine Waterston and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), stylish direction and tons of gripping spy intrigue, The Agency was quickly renewed for season two.
The plot synopsis for the new batch of episodes reads: "Samia, Martian's lover, is a political prisoner in Sudan, and he will do anything to try to save her, even past the point of treachery.
"The only way out is deeper in. A knife-edge Martian must walk if he is to save love, life, and his mission."
Now available to watch in its entirety on Paramount+, the second season of The Agency is earning rave reviews.
Holding a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, you can check out some of those glowing write-ups below:
Inverse: "Neither self-referential nor cliché, The Agency continues to channel the John le Carré spirit, with modern binge-worthy propulsion."
Next Best Picture: "The changes [creators] Jez and John-Henry Butterworth make aren’t noticeably loud. They find what worked for them in the first season, build the series around the best aspects, and it more than pays off."
RogerEbert.com: "In a fantastic trilogy of final episodes, every piece of the puzzle comes together and proves that nothing can stop this show from continuing to burn a relentless fire that you can’t look away from."
ScreenRant: "Fassbender's role as Martian in The Agency season 2 not only serves as an acting masterclass by one of Hollywood's best dramatic stars, but it is also a lesson in how to build a complex and compelling protagonist."
