Those who have seen the film will know what we're talking about.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Monday, 3 August) is The Mist, the 2007 film adaptation of Stephen King's novella of the same name.

It centres around a man named David (Thomas Jane) who heads into town to gather food and supplies with his young son after a powerful storm damages their Maine home.

During their trip, however, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town - trapping the father and son and several others in a supermarket.

"Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice," the plot synopsis reads.

Adapted for the screen by writer-director Frank Darabont - who also helmed the beloved King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, as well as the pilot for The Walking Dead - the movie version of The Mist is an incredible expansion on its source material.

This is most clear in its final moments, where the film swaps out the original story's ambiguous ending for a much more definitive climax.

And while we don't want to spoil what exactly happens, JOE has previously called the ending "infamously shocking", adding that it "sent everyone who seen it staggering from the cinema in sheer disbelief".

If you want spoilers, check out the longer article we published about The Mist for its 15th anniversary here.
