Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, which follows Matt Damon as Odysseus on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, has now taken $1.104 billion worldwide. That edges past his previous best, 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085 billion), with 2008’s The Dark Knight ($1.005 billion) close behind. The three-hour film also stars Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o, and has become the highest-grossing movie of Damon, Hathaway and Pattinson’s careers.

It is one of three Universal films to pass $1 billion globally this year, and the studio was also behind Oppenheimer, the 2023 hit led by Cork’s Cillian Murphy — proof, alongside stars like Caitríona Balfe, of Irish talent’s pull in Hollywood. Irish cinema-goers can still catch the epic on the big screen, as RTÉ reported, with premium-format screenings driving repeat viewings. Nolan’s films have now grossed more than $7 billion worldwide.
