How The Odyssey broke Nolan's record

Nolan's adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, which follows Matt Damon as Odysseus on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, has now taken $1.104 billion worldwide.

That edges past his previous best, 2012's The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085 billion), with 2008's The Dark Knight ($1.005 billion) close behind.

The three-hour film also stars Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong'o.

The film notably also has become the highest-grossing movie of major movie stars Damon, Hathaway and Pattinson's careers.

Jim Orr, president of domestic theatrical distribution at Universal Pictures, said: "Christopher Nolan has earned audiences' trust by consistently delivering must-see theatrical events.

"The Odyssey is him operating at the peak of his powers."

It is one of three Universal films to pass $1 billion globally this year, and the studio was also behind Oppenheimer, the 2023 hit led by Cork's Cillian Murphy, proof, alongside stars like Caitríona Balfe, of Irish talent's pull in Hollywood.

Irish cinema-goers can still catch the epic on the big screen, as RTÉ reported, with premium-format screenings driving repeat viewings.

Nolan's films have now grossed more than $7 billion worldwide.
