Irish drama series that aired on BBC renewed for season two

Commissioned by RTÉ, the Dublin-set star-studded comedy-drama was later acquired by the BBC.

RTÉ confirmed the news today (Tuesday, 21 July), while unveiling its slate of upcoming drama series. As part of the announcement, the Irish broadcaster also confirmed that its gangster show Kin will return after a years-long hiatus.

The six-part first season of The Walsh Sisters premiered on RTÉ in Ireland last September, before debuting on the BBC in the UK in February 2026.

Inspired by five of Keyes' novels, the Dublin-set comedy-drama revolves around the "chaotic, dysfunctional but deeply loveable" Walsh family, who are made up of five sisters, a devout mother (Carrie Crowley, An Cailín Ciúin), and a bemused father (Aidan Quinn, Michael Collins).

"This is a sisterhood full of in-jokes, hand-me-down resentments and more than a few old wounds. But their DNA, history and shared love of power ballads keep the Walsh sisters together in the face of heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood."

Directed in its entirety by Ian Fitzgibbon (Perrier's Bounty), the first season of The Walsh Sisters earned positive reviews, with many praising the chemistry between its cast, its blend of humour and darker subject matter, and its cliffhangers.

RTÉ has confirmed that production on season two of the series has commenced.

The plot synopsis for the new batch of episodes reads: "Series two of The Walsh Sisters will follow Rachel, Claire, Helen, Maggie, and Anna as their lives evolve after the twin dramas of Rachel's spiral and a life-altering tragedy for Anna.

"Rachel must try to stay sober, rebuild her life, and navigate her complicated history with Luke (Jay Duffy, Northern Lights), while Claire is trying to live a single life, attempting to balance the mental load of motherhood.

"Helen is struggling behind silent psychological walls, confronting crippling anxiety; Maggie is preparing to become a mother while desperately pursuing a 'perfect' family life, and Anna is left to find a way to heal from the profound shadow of her grief."
