"I was like 'Damn! You're opening up a whole new thing with these characters!'"
Warning: there will be some spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder, but as it is to do specifically with the post-credits scene, it is only fair that the spoiler'y stuff comes towards the very end.
Okay? Okay! On we go...
Since the movie has been out for a few days, you've likely gone to see the fourth Thor movie, and as an avid MCU fan, you sat through the end credits to get both of the post-credits scenes.
And unless you're a major Marvel fan, you might not fully understand or appreciate the impact of the arrival of a certain character in one of those post-credit scenes.
In the run-up the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, JOE had the Irish exclusive chats with the movie's director, co-writer and star (as rock creature Korg), Taika Waititi, and you can check out that interview in full right here:
During the chat, in which he also talked about which directors he'd love to see direct a movie within the MCU, we asked him about the arrival of that specific character during the end credits, and what it means for the future of Thor and the MCU.
Waititi told us:
"I'll be honest with you, I have no idea what Marvel are doing next. I have no idea what is in Kevin [Feige, Marvel head honcho]'s head. I wanted to show Russell [Crowe, as Zeus], because it was important to me to show that he had survived, and hopefully go on to be in other films.
"And then Kevin was like 'Well then we should put this character in', and then I was like 'Damn! You're opening up a whole new thing with these characters!' Because all of those characters are obviously from the comics and stuff, which are awesome, and so to suddenly be introducing that stuff is sick!"
Okay, and here is where we get into SPOILERS!
During the post-credits scene, we see that Zeus (Russell Crowe) has actually survived Thor's attack, and plans to make humanity fear the gods again. To that end, he tasks his son with killing Thor.
The camera pans, and we see... (pause for dramatic effect)... Hercules! Played by none other than Brett Goldstein of Ted Lasso fame!
In the comics, Hercules has been both Thor's biggest enemy, before becoming a long-time member of the Avengers, and also plays a pivotal role in the Secret Invasion storyline, which all current hints indicate will be the next Thanos-level threat within the MCU.
Or they'll just do something completely new and different with the character of Hercules, we have no way of knowing right now. But either way, we're excited!
Thor: Love and Thunder is in Irish cinemas right now.
