Netflix has just added Train Dreams, a stunning new Western drama movie starring Joel Edgerton (The Gift, Warrior).
Based on a novella by Denis Johnson (Jesus' Son), the film chronicles the life of Robert Granier (Edgerton), a seemingly ordinary and unassuming man, who grows into adulthood among the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest at the turn of the 20th century.
There, he meets his wife, Gladys (Oscar-nominee Felicity Jones, The Brutalist), and has a baby.
To provide for his newfound family, Robert takes on jobs as a logger and a railroad worker, work that is both dangerous and requires him to be away from home for long stretches of time.
The story follows Robert for decades as he experiences love and loss but also beauty, brutality and a newfound meaning for the forests and trees he has felled.
Train Dreams comes from Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar, the writer-director team behind the recent Oscar Best Picture nominee Sing Sing.
Train Dreams is absolutely gorgeous. The movie's lyrical direction and writing, its screenplay's epic scope, its gorgeous natural settings, and its soulful performances all combine to create this highly emotional meditation on the relationship between work and family, humans and the land, and humans and time.
As its story plays out, the film becomes an ode to a type of person who was a part of big social changes, but will probably never be heralded or singled out in the annals of history.
Like in a forest, where the smallest bug plays a huge role in sustaining the ecosystem, the Western drama argues that every person’s life is fascinating if you drill down deep enough, and that all those lives coalesce into the grand tapestry that is existence.
Holding a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Train Dreams is streaming on Netflix now.
The supporting cast of their latest collaboration also includes Irish Oscar-nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), as well as Clifton Collins Jr. (Jockey), Nathaniel Arcand (Sinners), Paul Schneider (The Assassination of Jesse James), Will Patton (No Way Out) and William H. Macy (Fargo).
