An underseen mystery crime thriller movie is on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The film was directed by and stars a Hollywood legend.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 23 April) is True Crime, the 1999 mystery crime thriller directed by and starring Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven).

Based on Andrew Klavan’s 1995 novel, the film sees Eastwood play Steve Everett, a womanising journalist and recovering alcoholic.

“A chance assignment finds Everett interviewing death row inmate Frank Beachum (Isaiah Washington, Clockers),” the plot synopsis reads.

“When Everett uncovers evidence indicating Beachum may be innocent, he must race against time to uncover the truth.”

Alongside Eastwood and Washington, True Crime’s ensemble cast includes Bernard Hill (Lord of the Rings), Denis Leary (The Thomas Crown Affair), Diane Venora (Heat), Frances Fisher (Titanic), LisaGay Hamilton (Vice) and Michael McKean (Better Call Saul)

It also features future stars Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) and Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels) in small early parts.

True Crime earned mixed reviews from critics upon release and was a box office flop. That said, fans of Eastwood and crime mysteries may want to seek it out.

The film is airing on RTÉ2 at 9pm. It should also be available to stream on the RTÉ Player after it airs.

Here are the other movies on TV tonight:

The fun Brad Pitt-led action flick we recommended last week.

Also known as Arsenal, this 2017 crime thriller starring John Cusack and Nicolas Cage was critically panned upon release.
