WATCH: The new True Detective season 3 trailer raises the ghosts of the past

True Detective season three trailer

In more ways than one.

We’re not too far away from the new year, which means we’re close to the grand return of one of HBO’s most celebrated and also weirdly maligned shows.

It seems that everyone loved True Detective season one.

You had career-best work from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, an exciting and unsettling mystery, beautiful cinematography and some excellent writing.

Season two, however, changed the game by bringing in a whole new cast of characters – with Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch at the forefront – and a new story that wound up being severely overwritten and nowhere near as compelling as round one.

Still, this writer will continue to argue that season two has a lot going for it, and ultimately just couldn’t live up to the colossal levels of hype going in.

It’s far from perfect, but it also doesn’t deserve the kicking it received.

All that said, season one is king. Season three, on the other hand, which officially returns on 13 January, has much to do.

It has to live up to season one, eclipse season two and stand tall as its own great epic mini-series.

The pressure is very much on.

Early signs are promising, with Oscar winner Mahershala Ali heading up a fresh tale of intrigue and suspense.

The latest trailer, released on Friday evening, presents Ali’s character exploring “a grisly crime involving two missing children in the heart of the Ozarks” and the aftermath many years later.
