This is definitely up there with Randy Marsh’s infamous (albeit fictional) appearance on Wheel of Fortune; in fact, it’s probably even worse.
The pressure of appearing on live television and trying to beat opponents to the punch can lead to contestants doing strange things on game shows but surely there is no excuse for what must be one of the worst ever attempts to solve a puzzle on Wheel of Fortune in the States on Wednesday night.
After the three contestants had unlocked all but four letters to a puzzle in the Song Lyrics category that read ‘S_RF C_ _Y _ERE _E COME’, one of them, a guy called Stephen, jumped in with what he was sure was the obvious answer… ‘Surf Clay Here We Go’.
We’re sorry Stephen, but what the f**k? Apart from the fact that the last word was already solved, what the hell is ‘surf clay’ and why in God’s name would anyone ever pen a lyric that reads ‘Surf Clay here we go’. Seriously, in what context does that line form a legitimate sentence?
The reaction of host Pat Sajak is priceless and, not surprisingly, it didn’t take long for one of Stephen’s fellow contestants to finish the puzzle by correctly guessing that the line read ‘Surf City here we come’ in reference to a song, ‘Surf City’ by the Beach Boys.
What prompted Stephen to come up with the line in question? Well, as the Beach Boys themselves might say, God only knows.
