Any in your county?

There’s some breathtaking scenery in our 32 counties but did you know that all of these battle sequences were filmed in Ireland? Here’s a few of our favourites from TV and film.

Braveheart

Location: The Curragh Plain, a 5000 acre tract of land between Newbridge and Kildare, Co Kildare.
Scene: The Battle of Stirling Bridge.

Vikings

Location: The majority of the show is shot at Lough Tay, Wicklow.
Scene: To the Gates! during the first Paris attack.

Reign of Fire

Location: Ardmore Studios and the Wicklow Mountains. Many of the aerial shots were taken over the Sally Gap and Wicklow Mountains. Ballinascorney Quarry near Blessington was also transformed for the film into a blackened looking waste ground.
Scene: Anything with a dragon. In hindsight, Ireland really is the home of dragons.

King Arthur

Location: Ardmore Studious in Wicklow but Hadrian’s Wall was filmed in Ballymore Eustace, County Kildare and the Luggala and Powerscourt Estates in Wicklow were also used.
Scene: The Battle of Badon Hill.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Location: Cliffs of Moher, Clare.
Scene: Granted only the exterior is seen, but the cave in which Dumbledore fights off Voldemort’s dark forces was in Clare. The Princess Bride also used this location.

Game of Thrones

Location: Saintfield, Down.
Scene: The Battle of the Bastards.

Magheramorne Quarry in Antrim was used to build the set for Hardhome but the show somehow managed to top that amazing sequence with an even more memorable one this season.
