We've known for some time now that the Simpsons had planned to kill off a major character in the current series. While all sorts of names were suggested, yesterday Simpsons show runner Al Jean all but confirmed who was getting the chop.
At a Television Critics Association event Jean said the character to bite bullet was 'obvious' based on clues already mentioned and that the episode in which they would meet their fate was called 'A Clown in the Dumps'.
That strongly suggests that the much beloved character of Krusty the Clown is on his way out. The actor playing him, Dan Castellaneta, has won an Emmy, which was another clue we had and it also means we can rule out the shows other big name clown, Sideshow Bob, voiced by Kelsey Grammar.
Last year when the story first emerged, Jean said that '"People who reported on it then reported we were killing an 'iconic' character; I’d like to say it’s a great character, but I never used the word 'iconic'."
Krusty is surely 'iconic' at this stage. We're confused, and a little upset.
It is all too much to take on a Monday morning.
