There are certain characters that become so ingrained in pop-culture that they seem to take on a life of their own.
This week, I’m focusing on the incredibly narcissistic, borderline psychotic but utterly brilliant sex-pervert from Paddy’s Pub, the one and only, Dennis Reynolds.
In three words, he’s: A golden god (his own words here)
Why he’s a TV great: We’re going to keep talking about the genius of IASIP until everyone watches it because it’s having the desired effect, the lads even popped over to Ireland for a visit.
One of the joys of the show is seeing Dennis’ descent from a shallow, vain and deluded womaniser in the first series into a fully fledged psychopath but the show is so clever and funny that you can’t help but laugh as the madness unfolds.
As the de facto leader of ‘The Gang’ he’s selfish, insane and has a tendency to film any girl that’s in his apartment – further proof that the D.E.N.N.I.S system is working – but there’s so much more.
His massively inflated sense of self-worth is entirely dependent on what others think of his appearance – his shirt won’t pop itself off – but this massive ego ultimately causes him to flip-out in some brilliant moments of comedy.
The man has done all of the following;
He’s incapable of having feelings, given Mexican diet pills because Mac’s weight insulted him, kept an erotic diary of his sexual conquests, performed an intervention on Charlie and enjoyed ‘getting off’ from the thrill of wearing another man’s skin. All this without mentioning the Asian-American golf caddy in the locker room. I’ll say no more.
His best quote: So many to choose from but I’ve opted for, “Hi. I’m a recovering crackhead, and this is my retarded sister I take care of. I’d like some welfare please”. Then again, in the episode when the gang break Dee, this line sums up his psychopathic ways “So after she bombs tonight, I’ll put them together, thereby controlling the situation, and her, as I always have, and I always will”.
If we could put him in any other show: The D.E.N.N.I.S system belongs on every show but I’d love to see what he would be like in ‘Sex in the City’ or ‘Orange is the New Black’.
His best scene: If ever there was one scene to reveal EVERYTHING about a character then it’s this one. Deranged, perverted but genius. The look on his face is priceless.
