The worst areas for clamping in Dublin have been revealed

JOE

Take note if you’re parking the car in the capital.

An average of 129 motorists have their vehicles clamped each day in Dublin city, where Mespil Road is the busiest area for the clampers.

Dublin City Council have released figures which show that a total of 23,383 vehicles were clamped for illegal parking in the first six months of 2019 – a daily average of 129, as reported by Sean McCárthaigh.

Mespil Road remains at the top of the list for illegal parking, with 416 vehicles clamped at the location between January and June.

Ranelagh has emerged as a new location for illegal parking, with 320 offenders in the first half of this year. This figure represents a seizable jump when compared to just 35 over the same period in 2018.

Here are some of the other locations in Dublin where the clampers have been busy:

Lower Gardiner Street – 171

Ormond Quay Upper – 186

Merrion Square West – 194

Merrion Square South – 168

Fitzwilliam Square North – 174

South Circular Road – 310

Waterloo Road – 301

Burlington Road – 208

The most common reason why vehicles were clamped in the first half of 2019 was a failure to have a valid paid parking ticket. This accounted for a third of all offences.

Almost 4,000 motorists had their vehicles clamped because the time on their parking fee had elapsed, including a 10-minute “grace period”.

Elsewhere, nearly 2,000 motorists were clamped for parking on a clearway, while more than 1,400 were found to be parking on a footpath.

815 vehicles were clamped for parking in a bus lane and 213 motorists were clamped for parking in a disabled parking space without a valid permit.

39 vehicles were found to be parking in spaces that were reserved for electric vehicles while a total of 125 vehicles were clamped for parking on a cycle lane.

Last year, the council recorded revenue of €27.9 million from parking fees and a further €3.2 million in clamp release fees.
